Bettany Hughes’ new series Seven Wonders of The Ancient World to use augmented reality

Renowned historian and Wanderlust contributing editor Bettany Hughes is set to be back on our screens soon with Seven Wonders of The Ancient World – and the series will make use of augmented reality (AR), allowing viewers to explore the lost sites.

The series, based on Hughes’ book of the same name, will broadcast in three 60-minute episodes. Making use of new archaeological research and the latest technology, the team behind the series has created CGI-replicas of the ancient wonders in the spots where they once stood, with filming taking place across Türkiye, Greece and Egypt.

Through Snapchat’s AR technology, you’ll be able to ‘explore’ these sites, which include the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, and the Great Pyramid of Giza, the latter of which is the only ancient wonder still in existence.

Speaking about the series previously, Hughes said, “With exclusive access to new digs and discoveries, this series takes us in the footsteps of ancient tourists, warriors, pilgrims, saints, and emperors who stood in awe of these magnificent wonders, some of the greatest achievements ever made by human hands.

“After years of researching across three continents—through deserts, mountains, and on the high seas—my team and I are now able to reveal not only the monumental effort it took to build the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, but also what these incredible creations meant to the people of the past, and why they still resonate with us today.”

The series, which was co-developed by SandStone Global Productions and Keshet International, is set to air on 5 later this year, although an exact release date is still TBC.
